April 21, 2016 -- Pacific Park's Ferris Wheel on the Santa Monica Pier was the first in the world to be solar powered. On Friday, the park will celebrate Earth Day by having the wheel literally go green from sunset o midnight, park officials said.

The nine-story Ferris wheel, which towers 130 feet above the Pacific, will use its custom, computer-generated lighting system to display a variety of patterns and designs with its 160,000 energy-efficient LED lights, officials said.

"Pacific Park is committed to being a leader in its industry for green initiatives and sustainability," Park officials said in a statement this week.

"This dedication is evident in the air by the world’s first solar-powered Ferris wheel and on the ground with the introduction of the world’s first wind-powered midway game, among a variety of other business greening initiatives."

Pacific Park received the “Excellence in Stewardship of the Natural Environment” award during Santa Monica's annual Sustainable Quality Awards for its efforts.

Last month, the amusement park announced it would replace its bulbs with new lights that will allow for more clarity and precision, while being more energy efficient than the existing eco-friendly LED lights, which currently save 75 percent more energy than the traditional incandescent bulbs used on most Ferris wheels, officials said.

The new nearly $1 million lighting package will be installed in time for the park's 20th Birthday Celebration May 26, officials said.

While many Earth month events took place locally last week, Earth Day is officially celebrated around the world on Satuday, April 22.

Earth Day, which demonstrates support for environmental protection, was first celebrated in 1970. It has since spread to some 200 countries worldwide.

Pacific Park offers 12 amusement rides, 14 midway games, an oceanfront food plaza and retail shops, as well the Pacific Wheel, the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel.

Signature rides include The West Coaster, a steel roller coaster that races 55 feet above the Santa Monica Bay, and Inkie’s Air Lift Balloon Ride, the "high-flying, family-sharing kids’ ride," officials said.
