June 8, 2012 -- Santa Monica's Annenberg Community Beach House will welcome in the summer season with three months of activities for young and old, swimmers and landlubbers alike, starting next week and running through September 3.

Beginning on Saturday, June 16, the Annenberg Beach House will kick off the summer season with a special all-day event designed to get visitors into a festive mood with a DJ, as well as contests for the kids, art for perusing, and sports for the athletic.

City officials are adding some new events to the docket this summer, as well.

Every Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., adults 18 and older will be welcome to swim in the House's beachside pool for $7, or $5 with a same-day pool pass, City officials said.

For those who would rather take in culture than play in the water, “Pop-up theater company Salty Shakespeare will be rehearsing 'Hamlet' onsite,” City officials said.

Come mid-July, people will be able to see the theater company perform. Those interested can register at annenbergbeachhouse.com/beachculture this month.

For those who prefer more hands-on activities, the Beach House will hold its first Cardboard Yacht Regatta on Saturday August 25.

“Choose your co-captain and start prepping your vessel... Teams of two construct yachts from corrugated cardboard and duct tape,” City officials said. “Spectators welcome.”

Registration is $15 for each yacht.

The Beach House has a new recreation room, open daily from 11 am to 2 p.m. “with games and other free activities for kids of all ages,” City officials said.

In addition to the new activities, the Beach House will still have the usual activities, including courtyards, a view deck, a splash pad, an accessible play area, and beach courts for volley ball, tennis, and soccer open daily to the public from 8:30 am to 8:30 p.m.

“The pool will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 p.m.” and will only cost $1for admission every Monday through the summer except September 3.

There will be ocean and heated pool classes, including Open Ocean Swimming, Stand Up Paddleboarding, S.E.A. Skin Diving, Semi-Private Swim Lessons for youth and Synchronized Swimming with the Aqualillies.

For landlubbers, check out Beach Volleyball with co-ed classes for adults and youth, YogaBuddies (ages 5-11) or Yoga for adults, with an ocean view.
