Police to Enforce Motorcycle Safety

By Lookout Staff

August 27, 2010 -- Santa Monica police officers will be out in force Sunday in an effort to enforce motorcycle safety.

The additional officers will patrol areas frequented by motorcyclists and where motorcycle collisions occur, said Sgt. Jay Trisler, the Police Department spokesman.

"Officers will be strictly enforcing traffic violations committed by motorcyclists, as well as drivers of automobiles, since their actions can lead to motorcycle collisions, injuries and fatalities," Trisler said.

The number of fatalities as a result of motorcycle collisions have skyrocketed over the past decade, from 204 people killed in 1998 to 560 killed in 2008.

Drugs, alcohol, speeding and inexperience are some of the major factors contributing to the rise in fatalities.

"Many people are riding motorcycles without the proper the skills necessary to ride safely," Trisler said.

Riders can get training through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. Information and training locations are available at www.CA-msp.org or 1-877 RIDE 411 or 1-877-743-3411.

The Santa Monica Police Department reminds all motorists to be alert and be on the lookout for motorcycles, especially when turning or changing lanes.
