Tap Your Way into the Sunset Sunday

By Lookout Staff

August 10 -- Hot on the heels of last week’s kick-off concert, the Jazz Tap Ensemble Quintet will tap their toes -- and heels -- across the Santa Monica City Hall lawn Sunday.

The second Jazz on the Lawn concert features two dancers and three musicians from the nationally acclaimed company that will showcase its virtuoso talents in a spirited display of creativity and spontaneity.

"It will make you jump out of your shoes and beat your feet," wrote the Wall Street Journal.

Currently celebrating its 27th anniversary, Jazz Tap Ensemble has presented some of the world's greatest tappers including Gregory Hines and Savion Glover.

On Sunday, two of Jazz Tap Ensemble's most gifted and highly popular tappers, Channing Cook Holmes and Josette Wiggan will perform pieces from the Ensemble's upcoming show American Tap Masterpieces: The Hollywood Journey along with tributes to dance legends Jimmy Slyde and Gregory Hines. T

“Hailed as leaders in the renaissance of tap, this outstanding company will present two dancers and three musicians from the ensemble whose virtuoso dancing and musicality will simply blow you away,” read a statement from the City’s Cultural Affairs Division.

“Under the direction of artistic director Lynn Dally, these amazing artists will create a display of spirited creativity and spontaneity that make the Ensemble one of Southern California’s most prestigious dance companies.”

Sunday’s concert, which begins at 5 p.m. on the City Hall lawn, is the second of four Sunday concerts this month courtesy of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission’s Free Concerts in Public program.

The other shows August 19th and 26th present dazzling jazz ensembles on the lawn in front of City Hall and feature cool trumpet sounds and salsa.

“Bring your friends, your family and a picnic dinner to this series of free outdoor concerts where you can spread a blanket on the grass, stretch out in your lawn chair and doze in the shade of your own beach umbrella and enjoy the coolest breezes and hottest sounds in all of LA,” read a statement released by the Cultural Affairs Division.
