Events to Remember September 11 By Lookout Staff Sept. 10 -- Although it occurred 3,000 miles away, the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. two years ago took a toll on Santa Monica, killing two of its residents and sending the city scrambling to cope with the shock On Thursday, two events will remember the events of September 11, 2001 that irrevocably changed the world we live in. At 11:15 a.m., the Associated Students of Santa Monica College invite the community to reflect on the events of 9/11 and share an understanding of how the world has changed. "Honoring the Memory, Rebuilding a future," will be held at the amphitheater of the main campus at 1900 Pico Boulevard. In the evening a silent candlelight vigil will be held in Downtown Santa Monica coordinated by the Santa Monica Bay Interfaith Council, along with the September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. The Circles of Hope healing memorial will take place at the Center Court of the 1300 Block of the Third Street Promenade, located between Arizona and Santa Monica Boulevard. All members of the community are invited to attend. Spiritual and musical reflections begin at 6 p.m., followed by the candlelight vigil at 6:30 p.m. The Santa Monica Bay Interfaith Council is a multi-religious group that provides community services and interfaith outreach. Peaceful Tomorrows is an advocacy organization founded by family members of September 11th victims who united to turn their grief into action for peace. The group’s mission is to seek effective, nonviolent solutions to terrorism. |
