A Teen's Wild Ride Ends with a Bang

By Lookout Staff

April 8 -- A joy ride turned into a trip to the police station after a 15-year-old boy, driving four friends in his mother's Jeep Cherokee without her permission, crashed into eight parked cars Saturday afternoon in the Mid-City neighborhood.

The Santa Monica teen was allegedly speeding westbound on Arizona Avenue and tried to make a right turn on 23rd Street when he lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a parked 2001 silver Ford Truck, a silver 1989 Mitsubishi Mighty Max Truck and a silver 1991 Infiniti, SMPD spokesman Lt. Frank Fabrega said.

The boy tried to flee the scene but instead crashed the 1994 Jeep into a blue1990 Ford Aerostar and a green 2000 Honda Odyssey.

The driver then made a U-turn back towards Arizona Avenue and struck two more cars -- a 1984 Mercedes and a 2001 Toyota Camary.

The boy and his four passengers then ran from the vehicle toward Santa Monica Boulevard. Officers responding to the call at around 2:55 p.m. found the suspect in the 2200 block of Santa Monica Boulevard.

The teenager was taken back to the scene of the crashes, and witnesses identified him as the boy behind the wheel.

During their investigation, police discovered the boy had taken his mother's Cherokee without permission. He was charged with unlawful taking of a vehicle and misdemeanor hit and run. The boy also was charged with driving without a license.

The suspect's parents, the registered owners of the vehicle, will be responsible for all of the damages.

The passengers were also taken to the police station, where they were released to their parents.
