The Hypocrisy of the ‘Districting as Voting Rights’ Squad

December 8, 2020

Dear Editor,

Craig Foster’s letter makes a critical point about the complete lack of influence Malibu residents have over the school system that allegedly serves their children ("This Is Why Malibu Needs Its Own School District," December 7, 2020).

What is unsaid is the complete hypocrisy of the "districting as voting rights" squad in Santa Monica.
Note that Oscar de la Torre, now a council member but long a Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District member, and his wife are both plaintiffs and champions of district elections to combat their accusations that Latino voters are disenfranchised in local elections.

However, they and the champions of their lawsuit and cause remain curiously silent about the effective disenfranchised school election voters in Malibu.

Of course, in the council election matter, it’s transparent that de la Torre believes he and his wife would stand to appreciably benefit from districting council election.

In the school board situation, without Malibu, de la Torre’s Santa Monica would lose the Golden Goose -- a marvelous example of the political hypocrisy.

Something students of our school system should discover in their civics course.
