More Than One Affordable Housing Provider Dear Editor: In a recent article entitled “City Embarks on Affordable Home Ownership Experiment,” you write that the Community Corporation of Santa Monica is the City’s “sole affordable rental housing provider.” Though the nonprofit Community Corporation has provided the majority of affordable rental housing with City assistance, there are many other nonprofit groups which have partnered with the City to contribute to the effort, including Project New Hope; United Cerebral Palsy of Los Angeles; Upward Bound; Menorah Housing; Volunteers of America; Step-Up On Second; and the Ocean Park Community Corporation (which technically provides transitional housing.) Additionally, several private owners have provided affordable rental housing utilizing density bonus incentives, and, in some cases, special earthquake recovery loans. Bob Moncrief Housing Manager |
